An exceptional example of the wonderfully unusual “Biscuit Calcite” habit from Fujian Province, China, this specimen is a miniature landscape of intricately layered Calcite.
Hundreds of creamy white, pearlescent Calcite crystals overlap and build upon one another, forming distinctive stacked, plate-like formations reminiscent of delicate layers of pastry — the characteristic habit that has earned these specimens the Chinese trade name 饼干方解石, or “Biscuit Calcite.”
What makes this piece particularly beautiful is the complexity of its crystallisation. Larger tabular crystals rise amongst dense clusters of finer blades, while stepped growth patterns and softly translucent edges catch the light with a subtle silvery lustre. From every angle, the specimen reveals another pocket, layer or beautifully defined crystal face.
Biscuit Calcite is a collector trade name rather than a separate mineral variety, referring to Calcite displaying this distinctive stacked and layered crystal habit. Examples of this material have emerged from Fujian Province and have become sought after for their sculptural formations and unmistakable texture.
A beautifully architectural Calcite specimen with a distinctly Chinese locality and an unusual crystal habit — the kind of piece that rewards being viewed closely, where its remarkable natural construction really comes to life.
13.5cm x 11cm. Stand not included.
Please note: As this is a completely natural mineral specimen, small inclusions, contact points, natural fractures, irregularities and variations in crystal formation are part of its individual character. Colours may appear slightly different depending on lighting conditions and screen settings.
